It is known that doing exercise produces pleasure. In moments when you don’t feel very good emotionally, a good run can help you feel better. But now it has been scientifically proven that exercise has a huge effect in acute depression treatment.

In the U.S.A they are starting to standardize depression treatments based in physical exercise (This data is published in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice).

In this way, aerobic exercise is the best for patients with acute depression. Doctors recommend 45 to 60 minutes of aerobic exercise, in a heart rate that is between 50% and 80% of the Maximum Heart Rate.

The results indicate a great improvement after the 4th week but the best results are produced after the 12th week.

These studies show that only the 15% of the patients abandon the treatment, the same percentage of other medical and pharmacological treatments.

They also advice other doctors in how to strenghten the adhesión to the treatments, including individualized routines, and helping the patients in choosing the right sport, taking into consideration personal preferences.

Michael Otto, author of the clinical guide Exercise for Mood and Anxiety Disorders, say that there are many studies that demostrate the same speed of recovery with sport practice tan taking drugs.
